Libretto by Salvatore Cammarano
Based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott
Set in Scotland, mid 18th century
Premier: 1835

Enrico is outraged to find his sister Lucia is in love with his mortal enemy Edgardo. Lucia and Edgardo pledge their eternal love. To restore the family name and fortune, Enrico tricks Lucia into believing Edgardo is unfaithful to her so he can arrange a marriage between his sister and Arturo. Edgardo finds out about the marriage and disrupts the wedding by cursing Lucia.

Enrico confronts Edgardo and challenges him to a duel. During the wedding festivities the priest Raimondo enters to announce that Lucia has gone mad and has killed Arturo. This is the most famous mad scene of all operatic repertoire.

When Edgardo finds out Lucia has died he is resolved to meet her in heaven and stabs himself to death.
